SEREVNA SAVINI

Introducing Serena Savini, Editorial Assistant

What was the first SFF book you were obsessed with as a child?

The first SFF books I can remember being obsessed with belong to an Italian series called le Cronache del Mondo Emerso. It started a lifelong obsession with half-elves, women with swords, and dragons. Unfortunately I don’t think they’ve ever been translated into English!

Name an Orbit cover that you love?

I like so many it’s hard to pick, but recently I’ve loved the cover for Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands designed by Ella Garrett, with illustrations from Bex Parkin. I love the colours and the little mushrooms!

What’s been your career highlight at Orbit?

I count getting the job last year as a massive achievement in itself, but going to my first book event (featuring Sara Hashem and Eliza Chan, both amazing!) was the first moment that made me go, “wow!”

What are your top 5 TV shows of all time?

Avatar: the Last Airbender (isn’t it everyone’s?), Star Trek (various ones, but TOS at the top), Gilmore Girls (ultimate comfort show), Anne with an E (it makes me cry every time) and the Untamed (in all its many forms).

What would your specialist subject be on Mastermind?

It simply would have to be BTS.

What one book do you wish you had published?

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, to this day one of my favourites in science fiction.

What’s your favourite trope?

These days I’m very into villain protagonists and forced proximity of the accidental-magical-bond variety. And I will always I love a crew of misfits becoming found family.

What would your DnD class and race be?

Tiefling bard, because who would say no to having cool horns? And I get to cast Vicious Mockery.

Star Wars of Star Trek?

Star Trek! While I enjoy the occasional Star War, Star Trek is where I live.
